Mine's strictly 70's - a 1979 superstar in desert burst, but I'm sure those came out in the 80's too, so it's almost an 80's! Great kit - birch - with an amazing bass drum. A 70's or 80's superstar will serve you well!

This post brings back memories of my Imperialstars I purchased new in 1984.I remember putting Remo Ebony heads on the bottoms because I did'nt like the looks of the gray speckled coating they used on the shells interior's. What was the purpose for that coating anyway?

To hide the Mahogany interior of the drums...
Here's my kit, candy apple red. I've posted in the gallery, but thought this was a good place to show mine again: :)

I think it was to protect against moisture. Also, I have heard that it was for reflection of sound. Imperialstars were awesome too in my opinion. i like Superstars better from that period. From what I know from playing them and reading about them the Imps were Tama's road series drums and the Superstars/Artstars were their flagship lines.

The early versions of both the Imperialstars and Superstars had re-rings. They quickly went to thicker shells...
Yes, I do recall those drums, as well as the earlier versions that had mufflers on some of floor toms. There were some 1977 Supes, which were the first versions...I think Billy Cobham was on the cover of the early catalog. As I recall, a few of his prototype drums showed up on Ebay years back.
