EAK or IAK? Last viewed: 11 hours ago

I recently got a pair of Zildjian 13” K/Z hi hats in a drum deal. Since I already had a set, I was familiar with them and the sound. This pair however is older. They have a much larger K on the top hat and does not have the R trademark stamp, and both cymbals have Zildjian and CO., with the O being as large as the C in the stamp. The lathing looks similar to the newer ones so I am unsure.

The set I already have has serial numbers whereas this set does not.

My phone camera takes pictures too big to post so I hope that I have provided enough to tell.

Thanks in advance.

Try cropping your photos to make them smaller. That usually works.

The top is an IAK (based on the lathing style) and the bottom is from the Z Series. These were released in 1987 in 13" diameter, and the 14" diameter in 1988. I wasn't sure when I wrote up my page

http://black.net.nz/avedis/NAK.html#EAK

if there were going to be K/Z tops which were EAKs rather than IAKs, so in my discussion I left it as "are these counted as EAKs?". The 13" size began during the changeover from EAK to IAK. Since that was written (2017) I would say that all the new models introduced after the Light Ride (1985) are not EAKs sensu stricto. With hindsight the whole EAK/IAK distinction works on just those models which were pre 1986.

Hope that helps.

That’s a much better understanding than I had, thanks!👍
