Yep, in the end I bought a Ludwig Club Date kit with original silver sparkle wrap - issue settled! :)
It is an interesting quest though. Bart's way is primo, or if you could find the right plastic sheeting with the proper rigidity, I'm certain my initial method would work. And I think we learned that you really need 40 grit if using glass glitter, or even 30.
