Did I do OK on this Slingerland snare? Last viewed: 4 hours ago

Please excuse my newbieness but, why won't they sound the same? Or, at least very close. This shell looks a LOT like the Pioneer. Even the bearing edges are close in appearance.

Don't get me wrong. I WANT it to sound different (obviously). But, I don't understand WHY it will be different.

Thanks

the way they are built constructed and even the same wood is similare with both your correct, but they used different glues, the stick saver rims, the snare bed! you'll see why, would you want 2 drums to sound the same? thats why you have 2 drums, look at it this way does a Paiste sound like a zildjian NO!

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

Thanks for the relies. No, I definitely don't want them to sound the same (obviously) but I just wasn't sure why the would be so different.

I am going to strip this one today and clean it up. I'll have it working by tonight and I'll do the taste test.

Thanks again for the input.

****!!! I can't believe it. I was stripping off the hardware and I actually broke a screw off in the lug.

It got stuck half way out (odd) and before I knew it, I broke it off.

I need to search around and see what the SOP is for removing a broken screw from a lug. I'm sure I'm not the first person to do that.

I really really don't want to break this lug.

Well, maybe I am the only one dumb enough to do this. A search turned up zilch.

I can tell you this.... don't use a standard screw extractor. You'll crack the lug. :(

So, now I have a lug that won't take a screw. At least, not the original screw.

It's not like it will make a big difference in playability and it's not a $500 snare but it was nice and cherry. I'm sad. :(

So, I will just use this lug with 1 screw. I'll point the screwless end of the lug toward the snare side and I should be OK.... yes?

Or, should I buy a new lug and do it right?

Bummer, man ... a little patience next time.

If it happens again, here's some advice.

Link..............

List your lug needed in the Wanted to Buy section.... someone will have one.

You may have to wait a little though .........:)

Good luck...

Yeah, I used the easy outs. The problem is that the screw jammed coming out so even though I had a good grip with the easy out, the screw still wouldn't come out. The more I twisted the easy out, the more it went into the hole and finally cracked it.

The good news is that I can still use this lug with only 1 screw, right?

The even better news is that I found another lug just like it in my "lug drawer" so, if I can't use this one, I do have another to use.

You're right. This was all caused by a lack of patience. I'll know better next time.

Still, this drum is looking great and it will be under my sticks in a couple days. I'll probably play it at my next gig this weekend.

Thanks

In an unbelievable feat of tap and die (and a little patience :) ) I was actually able to fix the lug. It still has the crack but I drilled and tapped it and it's pretty darn nice. The old screw fits and everything. I held it together with vice grips while I tapped it and it worked great

I cleaned the shell (check out the picture) and I'll polish the chrome tonight and get it back together by tomorrow.

You can see in the pic that this has very little fade for WMP.

I bought a new snare but, I couldn't find a 10 strand like it had so I bought a Puresound 20 strand. Trial and error. Certainly 1 way to learn.
