Hey guys, although i've stalked this forum quite a bit, this is my first post. I have a ludwig 3-ply 60s/70s 8x13 tom shell thats just sitting around(when i bought a used ludwig kit, i found it inside the 18" floor tom). I was thinking of using it as a lab rat and trying to restore the bearing edges, cut snare beds, fix some gouges in the outer ply, maybe painting or wrapping it. my question: do the thin 3-ply shells make for a decent snare? I already have a 5x14 80s supra, so i would think the old shell would make for a completely opposite snare sound. i think ill try it anyway as a project, but i was curious what you all think. thanks for the input
converting a 3-ply re-ring luddy tom shell to snare? Last viewed: 3 hours ago

8x13"? Odd
Nonetheless, yes 3 ply shells are fine. Ludwig pioneers and jazz festivals are sought after and all three ply shells.

1970 Ludwig Jazzette
I converted this old 13x9 Kent tom shell a few months ago.
I love it.... I call it The Deep Popper.
You gotta have a really low snare stand though !
:)
If you dont want to stick with such a deep snare....you might think about cutting it down. It is not as hard as you might think.
Here is a 10X14 shell that I cut to the size I preferred (6.5X14). I cut it first, then steamed the reinforcement hoop out, glued it back into position. I then cut the beds in, along with cleaning up both edges. I filled extra holes, re-lacquered the maple interior and re-wrapped the shell. It sounds great and made a great addition to the kit that I re-wrapped in NOS Blue Oyster Pearl.

Cool Daddy-O!
That looks cool as hell!! Are those small classic lugs or large? They look like small classic lugs. Are they 6 lug or 8?

That is two rows of 8 small classic lugs.
That would have been considered a School Fest. This snare really opens up when played.

mountainhick, Oh, my bad, it's actually 9x13! thanks for the input!
Drumjinx, how do you go about steaming re-rings off?
also, can anyone comment on having 6 lugs instead of 8 on a 13" snare? i have enough lugs laying around(though mismatched..) to put 8 on there, i just dont want to fill the holes and drill new ones. ive never played a 6-lug snare. my assumption is that it will sound more fat and less defined with 6, but thats kinda what i want
