Chrome Slingerland Snare....anyone? Last viewed: 1 hour ago

Hi Folks

I just picked up this snare from a local pawn shop for a song. I've taken it apart for a thorough cleaning. The thing is in awesome shape. Need to replace a couple of screws and the bottom head.

Can anyone identify the model and year from the pictures? Any help would be appreciated!

Nice find. That is the "Festival" model snare which was in production from 1963-79.

That badge is the football black and silver Niles badge which can be found on Slingerland drums from 1973-1986. The serial number on your drum dates your drum to around 1979.

From 1973-79 the Festival model was made with a steel shell (chrome over steel), before that it was chrome over brass.

You can take a look at Slingerland badges and serial number charts by going to the vintage drum identification tab at the top of this website.

Have fun with that one!

Thanks, James!

Wow, that really was a quick reply. Yeah, I knew the shell was COS and not COB because I took a magnet to it earlier. Forgot to mention that.

Yeah, it wasn't a bad deal. He had a blue 6 piece Vistalite set (all but the kick drum and snare - the kick was a wood Ludwig) with a variety of pretty decent hardware; Tama, Pearl, Gibraltar, Yamaha. It also had a Zildjian china, Z Custom hihats and a Zildjian thin stamp 22" ride. He's asking around $250 for he kit. I tried to get him to break out the ride and the snare, but he wanted to sell the set complete. I understood. So I made a deal with him. I got the ride and the Slingy. In exchange, I gave him an old Zildjian thin stamp 20" ride, a P.O.S. no name snare and 30 bucks. This way I could get what I wanted and he could keep the kit complete. Made my whole day. BTW, the cymbal sounds awesome!

Thanks again!!

Absolutely!! I'm always snooping around in them. However, they don't like to take drums because they take up a lot of room to display for a minimal return on their investment. My wife and I will sometimes take Saturday trips into the city just to hit the pawn shops. I've found some pretty sweet deals on things they know nothing about. I usually come home with one or two good deals and the wife comes home with an arm full of CDs and DVDs. It's the old primal thing......she calls it shopping, I call it hunting. Thanks, again, James!

I gotta tell you guys....I go the old Slingerland Festival snare together and used it at rehearsal last night. Holy Moley, this thing sounds awesome! I bought it because I needed a decent back-up snare drum for when I bust a head at a gig. The old no name POS I had was truly lacking. But now.....I'm torn between it and my old Rogers Dynasonic for my primary snare drum. This snare is very sensitive yet has some awesome power. And the rimshots are unparalleled. Either way, though, it's a keeper.

Great drums. I've got an 8-lug and a 10-lug. Powerful, articulate, and well under 100 bucks a pop. What else could you ask for?
