if a page is missing from a catalog, how much does that afect the value? The Band

Interesting question since I have a substantial catalog collection and one I had never considered. I have purchased catalogs in less then average condition, just to add them to the collection and make them availale to my visitors. With that said they had covers seperated from the rest of the pages and that probably dropped the price about 25% from one that had an intact cover. I do think that the older the catalog the less value it would lose. Meaning that if it super rare and old it will have pretty good value if it is missing a page.

In the older catalogs they also had other instruments so it would not bother me at all if it was one of those pages. If it was the color section or a more important page I can see that dropping the value more.

So I would say the missing page should bring at least 25% less value depending on the page and what catalog it was. I would also rather buy a catalog like that then one with water stains or torn sections which could bring at least 50% less value. Musty and dirty catalogs even worse.

I'm not sure I even answered the question

DOH

You might be able to find a copy of the replacement page at drumarchive.com. Not as good as having the real thing, but at least you might be able to see what you're missing..

This is only my opinion and how I would approach a sale/buy situation...

If, for example, it's a 1926 L&L catalog and the color page with the Deluxe (Black Beauty) is missing then yes, that's major...conversely, if the b&w page with the slap sticks and duck calls is missing then that's not a big problem for me...you still have subtract something though in either situation...hope that helps.

I agree with Mike. A lot of the value in those old catalogs is the historical perspective it provides for some of the rarest vintage drums, to say nothing of the fact that it helps in identifying the drums themselves since those photos are 100% correct because they are from the factory that produced the drum. That information is a lot more important to a vintage drum collector than information on misc accessories. However, Mike is correct in that there would need to be some sort of adjustment to the price even if the missing page was only for incidental items since the catalog is technically incomplete.
