Can't bid because I'm in Canada?? Last viewed: 18 minutes ago

I've been turned down a number of times because ebay sellers won't allow Canadian bidders. Is there more to it than just the extra shipping charges? Is it that much of a hassle to ship to Canada?

I'm just asking.

It's a little frustrating when you finally find something that you're looking for and then find out you can't bid or buy.

I even have an address in the USA that I have some items shipped to when I buy with my Credit Card. But when it comes to eBay, because my account is registered in Canada, I don't even have the option of having it shipped to my USA address: I get banned from bidding right from the start.

Someone on a Forum that lives in the USA is willing to bid for me and ship an item to me that way. I haven't used his offered services yet and it's very generous of him to do that - he doesn't even know me except for the Drum Forum.

Thoughts?

When shipping within the US, you can use Fedex, UPS, or USPS, print a label at home, and then either drop off the package or have it picked up. It's very, very easy.

With Canada, since it's another country, customs forms must be filled out. Though it's not very difficult, just the thought of that extra step scares a lot of people away. It's a bit of a pain to fill out all of the information, especially for USPS...you have to get the form, and fill in the info one letter per square...it takes a while, and then the postal clerk has to key in every single thing written on the form, which for me has taken up to 1/2 hour with a slow employee.

Most in Canada ask to not go with Fedex or UPS, because they're more expensive and charge an additional broker's fee. So you're stuck with USPS and filling out that stupid form. And then a lot of Canadian buyers ask for a lower customs value, or to mark it as "gift", and those requests also scare people off.

So, while it's not a big deal to ship to Canada (I ship there all the time), it is enough of a pain that many sellers won't bother.

Yes - thanks. I thought it might be something like that because some USA sellers have actually said it's too much of a bother....

Funny though, when I ship to the USA through Canada Post all I do is fill out a simple Customs Declairation....one or two minutes......two or three fields = what it is, what's it worth & sender/receiver addresses. I just sent some parts through to a Forum member and it only took about a week to get there. But coming this way from the USA it always takes at least two weeks unless I pay the Express Postage.

AND THANKS FOR THE OFFER Vintagemore2000 - I'll keep that in mind

Alot of US sellers have been burned one way or another because they are not prepared to take the 2 minutes to do the paper work.I,ve always hoped there would be a market for just Canadians because both Governments make it difficult to cross bordersLame

This is why I don't ship internationally anymore when I sell on ebay. I've been burned before. Its not a hassle to fill out the customs paperwork, but it is a hassle when the person receiving it asks you to something illegal by marking the item as a "gift" or the paperwork gets lost along the way and the item gets tossed in the "dead letter office" because they don't know where to send it anymore, even though they are the ones that messed up and lost the paperwork. Domestic shipping is hard enough, never mind the hassles with international......Coffee Break2

I sell Internationally, I've had some trouble, but I have domestically also! for International shipping I only will use the USPS! they are they best way to go, and generally they have contracts with all the other countries so it's not a big hassle, On the customs form at the lower right hand side is a box #10 it's marked "If Non deliverable" simply fill out the buyers info also in that box, it will get delivered to the buyer, I've never had a International returned!! I just sold to GREECE, and have a leedy looks to be going to GERMANY, I find International buyers generally will pay more than the US buyers will!!

I will say that I've had next to no trouble when "I'm allowed to bid" - items take a little longer to get here from the USA - but it generally is only two - three weeks - sometimes faster. There are some great people on this Forum that are over-and-above "the call of duty" when helping to get a part/drum to a buyer like myself. That is much appreciated.

I guess I should fell not so bad when I can't bid - I get to save some money. That's great there are people that live in the USA - that don't even know me - that are willing to bid/buy an item for me if I'm really desperately wanting or needing it - that's pretty cool = good neighbours to the south!
