Can i remove gaskets from under the tube lugs? Last viewed: 9 hours ago

Loading...

Hi

On my 13" Pork Pie Brass Patina snare

the tension rods are kinda tight against the outer edge of the hoop hole,

making the rods appear under stress and slightly "splayish",

suggesting that the tube lugs are sticking a little too much away from the shell.

The lugs have them damn gaskets,

and I think that removing them would eliminate the imperfection.

Did the drums with tube lugs have gaskets in the past?

Would removing mine cause any "disturbance in the force"?

Thank you, brethren!

If the lugs are not brass you will get contact electrolisis, if they are non ferrous metal, you`ll get a mark under the lug from contact.

Maybe a thinner washer !!

I don't worry about the mark at all. In fact I will get rid of all that fake patina and let the drum age on its own.

By electrolysis you mean the parts will fuse? Seriously? :)

Not so much fuse but decay is the threat !!

I hate those CHEAP ass washers, too. I know some makers who used them on their undersized shells in order to make the lugs screws even. If they were removed, the lug screws splay waaaay out. I HATED that when I first saw it and swore to never own any drum that depended on them ever again. Plus, they look cheap....because they ARE cheap.

Short answer... yes!

You want to avoid metal on metal contact whenever you can. The problem is; when things come loose as they do over time, you'll get rattles. Other than that, I don't see the harm. Get your drum assembled and play it.

The earliest thing that can happen in just a few years or less, you`ll try and unscrew the lugs and half of them will twist off and be stuck in the lug !!

Other things you`ll notice, green around the bottom of the lugs, chrome flake`n off the bottom, and hole enlargement, but these take longer !!

The answer is for a builder to use gaskets, Brass or Copper lugs and fasteners when building a Brass or Copper shell !!

The manufacturers site claims the tube lugs are chrome plated brass.

So it is ok then, right?
