Camco project from hell (maybe) Last viewed: 2 hours ago

I just scored these on ebay - not cheap but some fantastic sizes that usually go for megabucks in their complete state. This is however a big old project which I suddenly feel a little daunted by but will try and document as best I can and post as appropriate.

I'm a dab hand at stripping back and re-lacquering but I'm now on the look out for Camco lugs, a couple of internal mufflers, all rims and tuning rods - and I figured the forum here was not a bad place to start. I'll pay reasonable market prices so drop me a line if you have something. To make life easier I am in the US now for the next couple of weeks with a mailing address in LA.

And before anyone asks, no I don't know what type of bass drum tom mount it requires. I'm hoping it's the classic Camco rail mount ('cause I have a few parts for this) but we'll see when I pick them up next week. This will also hopefully complete a "three bears" like descending series of maple finish Camcos starting with 24, 18, 14 then down to 22, 16, 13 and now these little babies (also a bit hot to try a 12" deep bass drum - though never a big 20" fan I have a feeling that this will be tres funky indeed.

And in parting all I can say is I'm thankful to the extremely favourable US exchange rate which made a purchase like this suddenly very reasonable indeed seen with non-US eyes. If you're selling anytime soon, do yourself a favour and make it available worldwide and watch those prices soar.

Cheers,

David

This one scares me....

Way past my ability to bring drums back to life.....

I guess we will not see you on the forums for awhile...

I watched that auction and couldn't beliieve the prices. I had my limit set, and it exceeded that limit. My main reason was on the pictures for the bass drum on the auction, they didn't look right. The 5 pattern holes looked off center for me and I've had previous dealings with "I Sold It" and they are not very forthright. I wish you nothing but the best with the restoration, and like the Webmaster said, guess we won't be seeing you post for a while. LOL

Someone has suggested Rogers swivo on the bass drum but oddly placed (this is a 12" deep bass drum so we'll see). I agree it went for a lot but these sizes in their completeness are, as you're probably aware, sometimes in the 2.5k plus range. The pain is slightly alleviated for me given the depressed US dollar and the fact I am physically in LA next week so I can essentially stick them in my baggage and take them back with me thus saving much shipping and other nightmares (unless the baggage handlers trash 'em, of course).

And I've a got a couple of "spare" drums where I may borrow the lugs plus I recently scored a package of old parts which will alleviate the horror of this - but that bass drum is still going to be a bugger.

But it's big job. Think positive thoughts on my behalf.

Cheers,

David

Living in Sweden, then going to L.A. to pick up drum shells. I want your job. Best of luck with the restore. Just curious if DW sells their lugs seperatly, if you don't want the task of searching for lugs and such....

The Sweden/LA thing was pure coincidence but I doubt I would have gone for it if I hadn't actually been here. But my job is not bad.

Unfortunately DW do not officially sell lugs to punters anymore though there are a few disaffected former European distributors who I suspect might have some stuff lying around and would not be too fussed about parting with them.

I've already been offered a handful of Camco lugs from one guy I know a bit - patience and persistence will out (I hope).

David

Wow thats a hefty price tag. This is a very blurry memory but I recall not to long ago I saw a camco going for around 600 bucks! At a drum store, not a pawnshop. I just remember it was a sparkle finish not much else, any how best of luck to you on this project.

Hey-

I've got a Camco bass drum pedal that I purchased new in 1965. It's in very good original condition condition with a replacement leather strap. Interested?

Cheers,

James

Just got a bass drum pedal actually but thanks for offering (13 bucks).

I'd love to know about that Camco kit for 600 bucks though. If it's an LA, it's possible (but still very cheap) but if it's an Oaklawn, go back and buy it immediately, then flip it for a whole lot more on ebay.

Electro music in the north of england might be a good place to try for DW lugs, i remember a whole box of lugs/ spares resting on one of their shelves.
