Best vintage base drum pedals Last viewed: 12 hours ago

Loading...

I have a 1969 Ludwig rock duo set.

This is a double base set.

I have Cannon double base pedals that I am currently using and I like them but they are not vintage. I also have a Rogers swivalmatic that is probably 70's that I have had a long time and used before I restored my double base set. I really liked it and was thinking of getting another to mount on the other base. That would be vintage but not Ludwig.

So the question is what would be the best vintage pedels to use as far as playing?

And are any Ludwig vintage pedals any good?

No amount of planning will ever replace dumb luck.

Vintage speed kings are great pedals if you can find ones without the typical worn out and abused footboard hinge. Ghost pedals are great as well, and again as long as they aren't all worn out in the hinge area as well not being messed about with the clockspring mechanisms. Nothing wrong with Rogers swivomatic pedals either. So they aren't Ludwig, but does it really matter? If you like them use them. Buddy Rich did just that when he went to Slingerland again and also Ludwig again after being a Rogers endorser.

I've used other Ludwig pedals as well besides the speedking and ghost. The Universal speedmaster is a great pedal, if not a bit lightweight, and you can usually find them on ebay for reasonable money. Also, the 60's-70's version of the Junior pedal has good feel to it as well, but is harder to find since they were not as popular as the universal, ghost or speedking.

The moral is buy the best condition pedal you can find. Ask for lots of pictures of the heel hinge area on all of these making sure they are not worn out. Also, get one that is complete, as spare parts for any of them (except the speedking) are hard to come by.

Rogers Swivomatic, Slingerland Tempo King, Gretsch Floating Action are my three favorite vintage BASS drum pedals.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

Just picked up another Ludwig Junior pedal today. These things are a very simple pedal with a great light feel to them. The thing I like best about them is that they are shorter than a regular pedal and they work great for smaller bass drums, like 18" jazz basses, so the beater will hit more on center. A Rogers swivomatic will do the same, but I've found that those pedals are getting EXPENSIVE. I did have an NOS Junior still in the box that I scored off of ebay last year, but I used it in a trade for some other gear. That one was the cleanest, smoothest nylon bearing pedal I ever played. And I got it dirt cheap too! Shoulda kept that one......

This one I just got is in good shape too, but needs a little cleaning up. Almost as smooth as that NOS one I had....

actually i love either speed king or ghost once adjusted and in new condition you cant beat them there so close in performance at least in my opinion to me the ghost is a hair more responsive

April 2nd 1969 scarfed pink champagne holly wood and 65/66 downbeat snare, and , supra same year very minty kit old pies
66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob
1967 super classic obp

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.
