Apollo Snare Throwoff Last viewed: 2 hours ago

My shopgoodwill Apollo snare drum arrived today.

Not a bad little drum but it was not as described in the listing.

The seller said the snare switch was in working condition. But, as you can see here it is not and it's missing the throwoff arm.

Does anyone here have a photo of what it looks like, if it can be replaced or do I need the whole switch??

You will need a replacement strainer, unless this is one of the ones with a screw in arm. Can you see if it takes a screw in, like a knurled lever with a thread on the end. This is a Star, try Mikey, he probably has one, but take a good pic of the side so he can match it. It has to be the one with the raised relief in the middle, like the one on there.

A Star....as in Pre-Tama Star?

Thanks Jonni...

More pix here.....

It is not a 'screw-in' arm. I can's see threads.

I guess I could friction-fit a piece of metal or wood in there????

It would be nice if I could get the part and just fix it. It's a nice weighty little strainer - it looks to be well made actually.

Also....

A WFL snare stand came with the drum.

I have a similar snare stand - a Ludwig - that came with an Acrolite drum.

I'm thinking the Thumbscrew here is the correct part. The wingnut you see here came with the WFL stand I got with the Apollo drum. The wingnut just does not look or feel right.

Does anyone know which is the correct one??

Does anyone have a WFL thumbscrew they want to part with?

Yup, this is the type of strainer found on most Star snares, and the missing throw arm is a very common issue. The good news is that nothing is actually broken, you're just missing the parts. The small lever inside the strainer, near the top, with the hole in it is where a small threaded notch at the bottom of the arm fits in and is held in place by a square nut on the bottom side of the lever.

It's a simple design, but is obviously problematic because over time the nut can be worked loose with the vibrations of the drum being played. The nut falls to the floor of the garage/basement/bar, ditto the arm, both parts roll out of sight, and are never to be seen again. Now, without coming up with some new parts, you're left with an adjustable butt end. However, I'll bet a trip to the hardware store would provide you with some options to make this strainer usable again without having to drill for a new unit.

In this tread there's a pic of a complete example of this strainer:

Are you sure that is the arm? I really have only had one of those strainers as most all of my Stars have either the 4 point Rogers knock off (pic below) or the 940 Super Strainer and 941 microsensitive butt (Fast Tension Snare Bracket). I would like to have an example of the 925 Rapid Strainer & 931 Back Plate ( http://www.tamadrum.co.jp/anniversar...cat_id=7&now=3 ). Anyway, Mikey will have one, I am sure of that. But if the one he has is only missing an arm that screws in, I may well have one of those.

I put a piece of dowel from one of my Tala Wands that's broken into the hole - held together with electical tape (tapered fit). I still have the drum completely apart - removing what little rust is there & tweeking the edges.

It would be nice to have the correct arm in place though. Yes - Mikey - if you have one PM me please.

Thanks guys!
