Acrolite? Last viewed: 10 hours ago

Ever since I started collecting drums (3-4 years ago)and restoring drum ( a few months ago) I have aquired several acrolite snares. I found a "mint" black one with a black, white. and sliver badge at a pawn shop for $50. I bought a bunch of drum stuff off of cl and it had a "ACROLITE", and some brand new zildjian a custom 14" hi hats and some 6-8-10 roto toms and a 22" zil ride, and etc..... The I bought some pearl exports of cl for 150 including a "ACROLITE" , not to mention some very nice new beat hi hats. I went pawn shopping one day and go a "ACROLITE" a picific piccalo, and a very nice premier metal snare, all 3 for $100. Last week i went to my fav pawn shop and got me another 'ACROLITE" Except, this one has a very ruff finish. What is the difference? Is this a 'ACROLITE ?

I believe it is an early 80's.

Early Acrolites were a natural aluminum finish with a clear coat. Later ones were painted grey. After that they went to a powder coated grey, which is like the one on the right. And then finally the black galaxy powder coated finish that they still use today.

Cool Acro's Poppy!! Nice score(s). As a side note, if that Pacific piccolo is the 3" X 13", then you got another great drum there. I got one about 3 years ago at Guitar Center for $50.00 - They had a huge stack of them and they were blowing them out for short money for some reason. I tried the demo they had out and liked it so I grabbed one.

I later stumbled across an article from a drum mag (Modern Drummer I think) which had a Snare Shootout article and the little Pacific made it into the top picks.

Not sure why, but there is something about that drum. It's super sensitive, sounds great and has the most rebound of any drum I've ever played (it's not even tuned up very high).

Hey Poppy, my first acro is supposed to arrive tomorrow! Can't wait. I found two in pawn shops last week, one for $130, a '60's with case and stand, which was extremely tempting! then i found the 'blackrolite' in another for $200, and finally found the one i settled on ebay for a cool $70 (it's an 80's model but I figured that ain't bad!).

Then I was amazed to find that they go for around $300 new!!!

ANyway, that's awesome you got the different finishes; a lot of people note differences in tone based on the different finishes.

Hey guys, Here's a couple of acrolite's I purchaced on ebay, the B/O is a painted gray finish and the B/W badge has a black sparkle wrap, ( not sure if that's the correct name of the wrap), Both snares sound great. I'll have to start checking the pawn shops in my area. D' Drummer

That's not a wrap on the black snare, it's powder coated. Black Galaxy is the official Ludwig name, I think.

AKA, the blackrolite.
