I'd say this guy didn't invest wisely considering the execution is so poor. If you are going to build a "true replica" you may want to at least pay attention to the details: 18"x18" floor tom, 8-lug 14" rack tom, aftermarket shells (even if they are Kellers), wierd looking grommets etc. Not exactly in the spirit of a replica or a clone, as far as I'm concerned. Bonham inspired, perhaps. I put together a replica a few years ago which was comprised of actual early 70's 3-ply Ludwig drums and I had a hard time getting $3k...but eventually I did, and made a little on it too :)
So what would bring this Ebay kit up to par with true specs. I am reading some sites including the Drumworld article and demos by John's old tech. He discloses some info, not everything. John played a 6 lug rack - and different sizes at different times, and had a Rogers consolette installed to boot.
Ebay kit is:
14 x 26 (8 lug - I got 6 lug hoops and plan to modify this shell or get another one to drill)
10 x 14
16 x 16
18 x 18 (This can be machined down to 16")
They are Keller shells.
The hardware is original 70s hardware from the looks of it.

And from Wikipedia:
Studio and Touring Kit (1970–1973)
Drums — Ludwig Green Sparkle
14 × 10ʺ Tom (mounted on a rail consolette mount)
16 × 16ʺ Floor Tom
18 × 16ʺ Floor Tom
26 × 14ʺ Bass Drum
14 × 6.5ʺ Ludwig Chrome Supraphonic 402 Snare
29ʺ Machine Timpani (1972+)
29ʺ 32ʺ Universal Timpani (1972+)
Ludwig Speed King Bass pedal
I got the Ebay kit for 1000.00 including shipping - not bad for a starting point to assemble something. I mounted a Lugwig consolette for time being. I have been a percussionist for 37+ years, and in my 'ear experience' these drums have dynamics off the scale. Hand and stick rythem sounds both are very high quality. They sound good, I am very pleased, but need some tweaking to dial in something closer to John's sounds.
Thanks for any help here!
