24x14 is a magical size! Working on an orphan to match my super classic kit. I agree about tom placement, for me 20" bass drums are the max I can do for a mounted tom.
Yeah, I probably would not be able to mount the tom on a 24!
I'm still a fan of an 18" for jazz and 22" for everything else, but 24" would be cool to have...maybe for more rocking settings.
I have an 18" for my jazz kit, and 3 kits with a 22" already....the 24x14 would just be an addition to my current aresnal! LOL...:D
I have owned 2 sets w/a 24.The first,a mid 80's Gretsch 13/18/24 was not good.Substandard build quality.Maybe the bass,at 16X24 was too deep. The set I play now,13/18/24 is superb.1983 Tama Superstar with a 14X24 bass.TOTALLY different animal.Powerstroke 3 for a batter, black Emperor on the front with a 6" hole which is reinforced, and NO MUFFLING!Very nice long tone if you strike and withdraw the beater, and controlled if you leave it on the head.
I put my 13 on a stand-mounted L-arm about 6" further to the left(from behind)than the bass mount would have allowed. This puts it further outside the circumference and can go lower down.
24 gives a great voice, especially w/ Calf heads, & some controlled muffling. My toms are always mounted on snare stands for a better sound, & more versatile positioning. (WFL Red Sparkle set)

Interesting...Yeah, I'd still be aiming to get a warm sound out of a 24". I'm never going to be a metal player...but grooving blues or roots rock and roll... yes!
Nothing's warmer , or more musical than skin heads.
I have thought and thought about it in the past year or so,and I think a 24" is the perfect size for most things...(roots rock/classic rock etc)
20" or 18" for Jazz though.............

I agree on these sizes for jazz...
But specifically I think I will like the 24x14 size (as opposed to 24x16 or so) for more rocking or blues types of things.
I play a 24 3 ply luddy..... it's been a challenge to tune and heads are a lil harder to find but's, it sounds like THUNDER!
I play mostly in bars and this drum needs no miking in fact i may muffle it more.
The big question I have is this...does anyone feel a 24" bass is necessary? I'm talking for "roots" rock and roll (you know, nothing TOO heavy) or blues kind of stuff.
I have two different 1960s Ludwig sets with 22" bass drums (mine are both 3 ply)
...or does anyone feel that a 22" bass drum is sufficient enough for that low end punch? That's kind of where I'm at... still debating whether or not to go for a 24" as an addition...
