20" Ludwig bass drum Last viewed: 1 hour ago

Saw an ad for this bass drum for $50. I'm just getting interested in vintage drums, and wondered if someone could tell me more about the drum?

Thanks.

Not original finish. Probably started life out as a Duco painted drum. Newer bass drum spurs have been added. It's a single-tension drum -meaning that the heads cannot be independently tensioned. Not an overly valuable drum and certainly not a collectible one with that many alterations. Fifty is about right for a gamble that it might sound good as a player's drum.

Ooooof....it's certainly worth $50. It may or may not be a Luddy, but if it's an old thin-ply shell with reinforcing rings inside, heck...it's worth $50.

Heck, the hoops and spurs alone are worth $50.

You could just buy some 2-sided, single-point lugs from DrumFoundry.com to replace the original thru-lugs, and voila !.....you'd have a bass drum with independently tunable heads, just like everyone else ;)

I'da jumped all over that one....

I was thinking the same thing, Jaye. That just looks like a great foundation for a "home jobber". Some lugs, a few more T's and claws, and there ya go. Pop an orphan tom and a marching tenor next to it and you got a NICE little jobbing kit.
