1976 Ludwig Rock Machine? Last viewed: 11 hours ago

I was a little hesitant to post this because ragingscythe just posted a set really similar to mine, but I figured I would show off some pictures. I'm a recording engineer and have started playing drums off and on for about a year or so now. I found this set in a goodwill type store, they wanted $300 but I just had to talk them down to $250. Besides two cymbals and a nice hat stand (which I knew were worth more then $250) it came with the following:

Kick Drum- 22 inches Serial # 1124945

Floor Tom- 16 inches Serial # 1122870

Rack Tom- 12 inches Serial # 1124988

Rack Tom- 13 inches Serial # 1124974

From research I'm guessing it's a 1976 set in butchers block, maple shells all 3 ply. I spent a good chunk of time cleaning them tonight and they look pretty good. Here are some pictures, and again if any of you guys that keep up with prices on these things could give me a ballpark estimate of value that would also be nice. Regardless I know I got a deal and I can't wait to get some new heads on them and see how they sound (They had the original heads on the btw lol).

They look like maple cortex, not butcher block.

Judging from the sizes it looks like yours is a "Big Beat," going off of this catalog.

You're right though, very similar xP. Same wrap and year and everything.

Well, I saw that catalog and I'm still a little confused. The cortex is just a label for the fact that it's wrapped in laminate, correct? So there are lot's of different things that they wrapped them in and this happens to be maple cortex as opposed to butchers block cortex? Did I get it right?

I believe you are right on the "cortex" part though I'm not sure, from what I've known cortex is just another type of wrap.

Anyway as you can tell from this page on the site's collection of catalog pages, the maple cortex is a much more pale color.

Ya, I would say mine is maple cortex.

Butcher block is striped of different shades. Looks just like a cutting board, hence the name. Yours has gotta be maple cortex. Also, to nitpick further, if the pinstripe heads laying next to them were what was on there, those aren't the original heads. Would have been sliver dots for that era.

Great deal on the drums. Enjoy them.

Good to know, I just figured since they were old ludwig heads (The front kick head is an old rocker II head) all around that the bottoms were at least original, the tops are remo weatherkings. Here are some pics, I got them all cleaned up and waxed!

Also, the mounting system for the toms has problems. The left 12 inch one is OK but I have to have pliers to screw down the bolts (Not sure if that's how they were originally). The dead bolt and piece inside for the 13 inch tom is gone and I have no way of securing the L thing that fits on the tom. I also think there is something missing to secure the bar for the toms going into the kick drum because there is a bolt I have to tighten to make it stay at the height I want it. Any ideas where I can get some original stuff? If my descriptions made no sense or someone can tell me the proper name for any of that let me know, otherwise I'll take some pictures of what I'm talking about.
