1973 Slingerland Copper over Wood finish? Last viewed: 1 hour ago

Hi Dr. I have heard that Slingerland's Copper over Wood-AKA-Copper Cladding finish was only available for one year? 1973? Is this correct? Or did Slingerland continue to use this finish on a custom order basis after 1973? Maybe 1973-1975? I was told this Copper finish was discoutinued due to the fact that the Copper did not plate very well over the Metal Wrap? What year did Slingerland discountinue this rare hard to find Copper Plated Metal Wrap finish? Any info would be great. Thanks for your time. Phil Cormier Fitchburg, Mass 01420

Copper was offered 1972 - 1976. It started out as relatively hot new finish on marching drums and then kits during 1972, and appeared in the 1973 and 1976 catalogs. Slingerland discontinued it by 1977 - that was about the right amount of time for all the ticking time bombs to start exploding. The problem was in the durability of the protective clear coat that was put over the copper. Eventually with use you get wear spots and scratches, exposing the copper to air. Oxidation starts and it's all down hill from there.
