1973 or 1974 Slingerland Jazz Time Kit value? Last viewed: 1 hour ago

Loading...

Hi guys and gals.

I'm original owner of a circa 73 or 74 Slingerland Jazz Time 7 piece kit.

24" oversized bass, 12-13-14-15 free standing toms, and an 18" floor. 14-15 inch deep chrome snare (Not in front of them now to measure), and Ghost Pedal.

Cymbals are all early 70's Zildjians. 15" thin crash, 18" crash and a 21" rock ride. The fourth cymbal in the pic is a broken cymbal that a friend broke while plaing for Ted Nugent in the eighties.

The ride stand is not Slingerland.

The finish looks decent but is not stock. I lightly sanded and re coated them with laquer(sp) long ago and it's not show quality but pretty good. Oakwood finish I believe and 7 ply if I remember correctly.

I have all bottom hoops. Hi hat stand isn't fabulous. Slingerland hardware at that time was pretty thin if you ask me. Some adjustment/tightening screws on the stands have been repaired over the years. The snare needs replaced on the snare drum and obvoisly all new heads are needed.

I also cut, bent and rewelded the tom stands below the tom mounts to get more angle out of them but they work great.

Kit has never been traveled, and has pretty light use and great care over the years.

I dont have the factory catalog but did at one time and I am sure the set is called "Jazz Time"

Im not a regular member but found the forum in my net search for possible value.

I remember having paid around 1200 new. I submit this to you for your thoughts and valued appraisal from my info and photo.

Thank you.

Cool kit. A bit too bad about the refinishing though, and also altering the drum stands.....that is gonna drop the value some.

But, on the other hand.....the cymbals, if in good shape, are likely worth about $300.

Those also appear to be the "good" shells, the 3-ply with re-rings variety.

Snare is likely worth about $100 as well.

I dunno...all in all...in today's market, maybe around $1200-1500.

Again, if there had been no alterations, I think it would up to about $2g.

The market is down now, and Slingys tend to be the most reasonably-priced vintage American mfr. to begin with, so...that'd be my guess...

Thanks Jaye.

Yeah they were a little scratched in spots and as i recall I lightly sanded them and re coated with a clear. To mint them out would be the same process but having clear coats sprayed on professionally. What I did was cut 3/4th the way through the tom stands, bent the heads down just a but and welded the gap. They are solid but I just didn't have enough tilt on the teflon balls that they rotate on for my tastes at the time.

I tend to like the toms higher that most and needed the extra tilt. At one time I also had all four toms on the right and or left of center with the 12-13 on top of the 14-15. free standing toms give you many set up options.

I am going to try to sell them I think. I just dont play them anymore and would like to see them go to a collector or someone who could enjoy them.

They have sentimental value to me as this was and is my only kit and was a gift from my father back in the day.

Honestly I have spent more time talking to you about them than I have playing them in the last 25 years.

What do you mean by re-rings. That the shells are 3 ply, and the "ring" at top and bottom is a 7 ply or so? You can see the fatter part at the bottom of the shell on the inside, and it's the same at the inner top.

Yes, those are the classic Slingy shlls ..."reinforcing rings" top and bottom.

In the 70's they also introduced a thicker 5-ply with no rings, probably to draw more of a rocker crowd...but it's their 3-ply shells which were always the best, IMHO.

Too bad, I understand the part about the sentimental value. I also understand the point of finding a better home for them if they literally are just collecting dust.

Regardless of the mods, the shells look attractive and the kit is a vintage old Slingy, so I would guess you wouldn't have too much of a problem selling 'em (but put the res heads on). ;)

When I played I used to use deadringers....I even used tampax and duct tape on the undersides of the heads to deaden them....lol

I liked that sound and used to use the oil filled deals. I rarely used the bottom heads. Oh and like a lot I could never stop the base drum from walking, so I used to have a 2x4 nailed to the floor in front of it. Not in that room on that floor but elsewhere.

Ridding them has a lot to do with space too. The room they are set up in now needs to be the new girls walk in closet as she's a clothes girl to the max.
