1965 Slingerland Jazz Set Last viewed: 1 hour ago

Hello! I'm trying to get some info about a Slingerland set that I have. I'm hoping to sell it, so knowing how valuable it is would be very helpful. I've posted several pictures at www.umich.edu/~jdhouse

Here's what I can tell you about it:

The drums are all wood shell with the Diamond Pearl finish (the snare drum is Marine Pearl). They all have a Slingerland badge except for the high tom. The badge is the black and brass Niles oval badge (with the serial number listed on the badge). The high tom doesn't have a badge on it, but it does have two stamps on the inside: one that says "DEC -- 1965" and one that says "P". The bass drum has similar stamps: "DEC 65" and "P". The floor tom and snare do not have stamps inside.

Here are the specs for each drum.

High tom: 8x12, 12 lugs, serial #??

Floor tom: 16x16, 16 lugs, serial #155367

Snare: 5x14, 8 lugs, Zoomatic strainer, serial #197049

Bass drum: 14x20, 16 lugs, serial #83609

Here are a few imperfections in the set: I'm missing 8 of the 16 tension rods for the bass drum. So you can secure the hoop on one side of the bass drum, but not the other (I do have both hoops). The reinforcement rings (both top and bottom) on the high tom have cracks in them. The bass drum pedal that I have is a Ludwig, not Slingerland. So I guess that means I'm missing the bass drum pedal (I don't know if a set like this would have included that when it was new or not). Also, I have the snare stand, but it is pretty tarnished. The hoops/lugs/strainer on the snare drum also have some tarnishing. The hardware on the toms and bass drum seem to be in great shape.

I also have an extra high tom that's unrelated to the Slingerland set. It has a Premier badge. It is 8x12, wood shell, Black Pearl finish, with no stamp on the interior. The lugs/hoop are quite tarnished, and I only have one of the hoops (and only 8 tension rods - enough for one hoop). Any ideas what this one might be worth?

I'm no expert, but here's my quick take.

1. The BD and wingtom (hightom) came together from the factory in 65. The floor tom was added later; and the snare was added even later (in a different finish). So these aren't really a set, but the BD and two toms are close enough to call a "set", although not being from the factory all at once will affect the price.

2. The snare drum should be treated and probably sold separately. It is in the Buddy Rich (white marine pearl) finish which is good. You'll have to figure out if it is a single-ply shell or multi-ply shell - single-ply is worth a lot more.

3. The "cracks" in the reinforcing rings probably don't matter - it looks like it came from the factory that way. Take the heads off and see if the tom is round (and not oval). If its round you're fine.

4. Tom mount looks original which is very good - extra holes would bring the value of the set down a lot.

5. BD pedal doesn't matter at all - those were usually supplied by the music store selling the set and buyer could swap for whatever pedal he wanted. The pedal you have is probably a better pedal anyway.

6. Tarnishing cleans up pretty quickly with chrome polish - just be careful not to mess up the plastic finish by going overboard. You should hand clean/polish and not use a machine. It doesn't look at all bad in your picture - the snare looks like it should clean up really nicely. You can use a plastic polish on the plastic finish

7. The Premier tom should also be sold separately. Someone looking for a Slingerland set will place minimum value on a Premier tom.

8. I really can't help much with value since I don't follow Slingerland sets much. The snare could be worth more than the rest of the set together depending on whether it's single-ply. So you'll need to do some more research (on the snare) and some cleaning. Have fun.

Interesting kit...you could certainly sell the 3 pcs as a kit...they are all of the black/brass era....could very well be that it was purchased from a store exactly as it exists now...Slingy was known for occasionally grabbing up loose toms at teh factory and combining them with whatever else was around. Now, there's some lug pitting, but that's OK.

You can either go on eBay and buy original Slingy bass t-rods, leave it as is, or buy some inexpensive generic t-rods just to finish off the hardware and sell it as whole. 8 Slingy t-rods would probably run you about $5-6 each.

The 3-pc kit has a market value of about $500.

...the snare drum, assuming it's not a 1-ply which I doubt it is.....maybe $125 or so.

Don't worry so much about the hardware. Now, since you have the snare stand, keep it with the kit. If you have a Slingy hi-hat stand, that is worth about $75 or so.

The Premier tom maybe $50 if it isn't a metric sized head.

Hey Jaye,

What's up with that pic? Who is that? It seems to be a cross between Che and Bob - minus the dreads and the really cool hat.
