1960's Pearl 4 piece? Last viewed: 3 hours ago

From kylebjohnson

Came across this kit and the asking price is $800. Is it worth that? Hoping someone on here will know. Have more pictures if you would like to see them. Thoughts?

The tom badge is different from the bass, different years, and maybe construction, and/or level of kit. IMHO, it's not worth $800.00, unless there's some really great cymbals that come with it..

Its better to have people think you're an idiot, than to open your mouth and prove them wrong, unless you doubt yourself then speak away....

Thank you for the info. The guy who has it was told the badge on the tom was different on purpose. But you're saying it comes from two different eras? No cymbals are included. Would you give $500 for it?

Kyle,

As is, from what I can see, the kit if the sizes are 12, 16, 22 IMO I would offer 250.00 and I think that's being generous in this economy. If you go to this page you can see for yourself if you look at Pearl Drums part of it that the badges are different. David (Webmaster) has done a lot of work.

The drums are probably Luan mahogany, and although the finish maybe rare and looks in good shape, I stand by my estimate. Strictly because I have the blue Pearl kit earlier in this thread, that I paid 200.00 for and that came with cases and the original sliding tom rack.

They are nice kits to bash on for me and my gigs, but nothing compared to my other stuff. If the sizes are jazz sizes, 12-14-20, then maybe a little higher than $250.00, but as I said earlier, that's being generous in this economy.

JAYMZ...DID YOU BUY THAT KIT ?

Kyle...they are basically the same era, late '60's...those badges almost were issued concurrently (they might have been, actually). So they are within a few years of each other, definitely, to say the least.

The issue becomes...the different badges shows the drums came from 2 different kits. So...the bass drum is a replacement, probably (or someone messed with the badges on some of the drums).

In which case, it's not an original factory kit.

Regardless, even a minty, minty, minty old Pearl from the '60's in a cool finish like that one, is really only worth maybe $500 -575, even with the pedals and stands included.

I talked to him yesterday and we came to an agreement. I'm not going to buy them from him. He really likes them and doesn't really want to loose them. I am going to take them apart and clean and polish them up, put a new front hoop on the bass drums and a bottom hoop on the tom tom. He will buy the parts and I will give the labor in exchange to be able to play them out every once in awhile. I really am looking for a smaller kit to play anyway. I may end up buying one of the newer Gretsch Catalina Club kits as my gig out kit.

Anyways, you mentioned about fixing the missing ply in the bass drum. Can you tell me how to do that? Is it going to be expensive or hard to do?

Thanks everyone for your input and help!

The wood on the drum is just Luan, while these veneers are better than Luan...harder, less porous. therefore there isn't much need to buy a really exotic species of veneer; I'd go with one of the cheapest ones. So, after measuring and cutting, applying and sanding down the edges to match the existing edge, it'd be good to go. I dunno if you wanna paint it over to match the rest of the shell, or repaint the entire shell (?) My instinct would be not to, only because it's a veneer and if the paint absorbs into it it may buckle (?) But you can experiment on a small piece.

The trick here is that you really, really gotta get a good strong bond of the adhesive backed wood to the existing shell. You gotta make sure there are no bubbles in between.

Cool, thanks for the info! I will talk with him and see what he wants to do. It might be a little bit, but I will be sure and post them when they are all done.

Thanks again!

Incidentally...when cleaning/polishing teh wraps...don't let your towel/cloth/wipe be too wet...the Japanese wraps tended to be thinner than their American counterparts and they are a bit moresensitive in that respect.

I don't think I'm going to fix the inside of the bass drum but just clean them all up and put new rings/heads on them. When I restored my 67 Ludwigs I used a Meguiars auto polish on them. Do you think this will be ok on the Pearl kit, or should I just use a moist towel?

Sorry to bump an old topic, but I've been looking at a kit similar to this. 13/16/22/w/snare, no badges and different bass legs but it's got all the rims. Looks to be in good shape, but I haven't seen it in person as it would be about an hour and a half drive one way. Seller wants $275 and I really dig the wrap, but that's a whole lot of driving if it turns out to be crap. Decisions, decisions...
