1960's Leedy Drums Last viewed: 3 hours ago

Loading...

After reading through the Rogers Black Friday Drum Find thread, I wonder if wet sanding with really high grade paper 1000+ would take away the yellowing. Or at the very least, somewhat reduce it. I don't think I'll get the drums 100% factory, but I would like to reduce some of it if possible. But until I get a few tips / suggestions I'm not trying anything.

And no, not in the car tonight. But they will be this week.

Do not wet sand that set. If you're pkannig on selling, let the buyer clean it up. This is not a run of the mill Slingerland Leedy...

Very cool find. It will be interesting to see what becomes of this kit overall. I've thought the Leedy drums from that era have been significantly under-valued. That set-up in any of the other major brands other than Slingerland is bringing thousands and up. When you listen to Shelly Manne playing his Leedys, you realize that they can be great sounding drums like all the others. I really like the COB hoops on those drums and the lug design is a real classic too.

I've only had one Leedy and I wish I wish I still had it. I had one Slingerland set-up with an 18 bass and got it for really short dollars, but it was a natural finish/outer mahogany ply set from the lowest end of their line at the time. Nothing to compare with what you have found in the Capri pearl.

As the guy who is doing the work on the Rogers Black Friday Find BDP kit, I would agree with Rich K and advise against wet sanding this particular kit. BDP seems a lot more forgiving a color selection - in addition my kit was 95% a nicotine problem, which the careful sanding (and nothing else) DID fix - but the bass drum still does have a traditional aging issue which the sanding was not going to solve. I stopped sanding when the smoke cleared, literally.

I would suggest Novus 2 as a good candidate. Those are going to be spectacular.

Those are real cool Jay! No sandpaper! You should keep them! Clean, detail, post pics for us then play em all night long. Happy for you!

Thank you!

From Creighton

$200 hope they are in the car heading home.

Please say you have the deal locked down.

I'd happily pay double that for those in that condition.

I'm a Slingerland guy, and I love the "Leedy" variation. Wish that someone were selling repro lugs.

Excellent score!

You can't see me now, but i'm shaking my head in disbelief with my mouth wide open.

I would agree with everyone saying NOT to touch them in regards to removing or reducing the yellowing.. It gives the kit some serious coolness and mojo to it that screams "smokey jazz bar" from the 60's ! Ultra rare and uber cool find my friend.. Congrats..Would definitely be a keeper . ;)

A good plastic polish like Maguire's will do wonders for the yellowing, which I think detracts from the cool and rare finish. Sanding is not a good idea but leaving them that yellow isnt either. Cool drums!
