Hey Dan, I appreciate your honesty. Obviously as a buyer you want to get it for as little as possible and as a seller I would like to get as much as possible. I just want someone who will be fair and honest with me. I will try to provide as much information as possible to be accurate with the condition and what exactly I have. I can't seem to nail down the age 100%, as there are a few things that seem out of the norm. For instance the engraving says "Ludwig, Trade Mark" as opposed to Ludwig, Chicago".I can't find this anywhere on my searches. I am interested in selling it and don't expect to get a high retail value, I would be happy to give a buyer a good deal as I value a "bird in the hand". Please let me know what you think a fair price would be. Jeff
Hey Jeff,
After re-reading my reply to you, I hope I didn't come off as a jerk. My point about the description is that a two piece shell is desirable and it is in your best interest to determine if it is and include that information. My point about condition is more to getting the high end of market value. Your drum certainly looks like a good one for sure.
In all honesty I have no idea on value...even if I wasn't an interested party...which is why I'd have no idea what to offer. A few months ago I bought a 6-lug Ludwig & Ludwig 4x15 Concert Dance model two piece heavy brass nickel plated snare drum with plain hoops (no flange) and Ludwig logo engraved on the top hoop, not the shell. The bottom hoop is the older style (older than yours). Vintage drum expert (and VDF member) Mike Curotto (who will probably weigh in on your drum and give a good idea on value) guesses my drum to be 1918-1919-ish. It was pretty dirty but cleaned up well. I paid $300 with free shipping for this drum. It appears to be all original. I have no idea if my drum or your drum is more "desirable" to collectors. They are similar but different. I don't know if I got a great deal, fair deal or overpaid. The unique size of mine probably makes it a poor comparison to your drum.
It's easier for me to post gallery links than resizing a bunch of photos:

By the way...I happen to have the original part you need for that P338. It came as part of a P338 on an old Black Beauty player I purchased a while back. I've since sourced one of Adrian Kirchler's awesome reproduction relic'd art gold parts for my BB so I took this one off the drum. I have no idea what to ask for it.
