1898 Imperial Drum Method Instruction Book Last viewed: 4 hours ago

I have an 1898 Imperial Drum Method Instruction book by Harry A. Bower. Very yellowed, but still in tact. Page 82 has military calls including Drummer's Call, Adjutqant's Call, The Assembly, First Call For Guard Mounting, Second Call for Guard Mounting, The General, To The Cololors, To Recall Detachments, Drill Call, The Police Call, Water Call, and Wood Call and others. Sort of let's you know where some of our drum heritage.

I tried to scan the cover and the Drum Calls Page but the files were too large to upload.

All pages are in tact. The part you would call the spine has been eaten by book lice. Other than that, the book is in mint condition and pages can be turned.

The book was published by The John Church Company, Theodore Presser Co., Selling Agents, 1712 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, PA

Price $1.25 (which I thought was awfully high for that era.)

Anyone want to venture a guess on value?

I moved the topic to the vintage memorabilia section so you are not confused as to how it ended up in a different section.

I follow vintage memorabilia more then drums in many cases and I like old books and catalogs. My collection is not large in any one area, but large in scope for the different items I have.

I do have a selection of old drum books yet to be added to the main web site and I like books like the one you have. The only thing is they do not fetch big dollars like other memorabilia.

I book like that in that condition might sell for between $25 and $75 if in excellent condition.

An early 1900's catalog of drums will go for much more. I have not seen much in regards to memorabilia from that time period since it is so early in the timeline of drums and drumming and the major drum companies of the USA like Ludwig, Rogers, Slingerland, Gretsch, Leedy, etc. They were all just starting as people let alone companies and they all pretty much started with Military drums and instruments etc..

I hope that offers a little help and insight.

Hi David,

I noticed your response to this inquiry about the 1898 Drum Method and am interested in locating a drum set method written by W.F. Ludwig, Sr. around 1924.

Do you know of any existing copy or where I might inquire about one?

Thanks,

Denny

At this point, the best place is Ebay.. Most collectors and people who find things go there to buy and sell..

I probably have seen that book or even have it, but that part of my collection has not been touched in 5 or 6 years..

Specifically do you know the name of the book?

When you search on Ebay always try different searches...

Ludwig Drum Book

Old Drum Book

Drum Book

Vintage Drum Book

Ludwig Book

Etc...

Try Amazon.com too. I've been looking for a copy of the aforementioned Bower Imperial Method for a while now which is how I ran across this post. I was recently outbid on a copy on ebay recently but just found a copy on Amazon via a google search. Give it a shot.

I just bought one on Ebay, the revised edition from 1912 though.

I was the only bidder and cost me all of $4.50 or close to.

But there are several of the 1898 on Amazon for about $40
