Vintage 18's are the most expensive bass drums you can find. They are hot items nowadays, and the size is very much in vogue...but it wasn't so back then. Most "smallish" kits back in the day just went with a 20".
So...18's are very expensive....at times, almost twice the cost as a comparable 20".
One all tricked out with spurs, lugs, hoops, tom mount, etc ? It'll set you back about $250 min.
If you get lucky you can sometimes nab an old Scotch marching bass or a 'jazzette' size one (both are 12" deep) since folks really want the 14" deep. Or you can try to nab a 16x18 FT and convert it (albeit that's a compromised solution since it still has tom-sized lugs and such).
I have given up on 'em altogether....I just built my first "vintage style" one from a Keller shell and some extra hoops; routed the edges to match the old-skool profiles....and it is the way to go.
Either that, or buy a "vintage style" shell from Aitwood or Precisiondrum.com. They are phenomenal, incredibly close to the originals, and cheaper than an original.
